• Apart from that Mahindra offers two powerhouses petrol and diesel engines and its also available in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

Mahindra Thar AX Opt “Base model” Review 2023

• That is a car that is famous among adventure enthusiasts.
• And especially India because it looks very much like a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.
• But Jeep Wrangler costs more than ₹ 60 Lakh so very few can buy it.
• AX Opt is a base model that features both a hard top and Soft top

• Let’s start from the front and see what Mahindra is offering us in this base model.
• On this base model, customers will get all-black bumpers with black-finished vertical slats on the grille.
• In this base model, customers will only get the R16 Steel wheels that look smaller.

• See having smaller R16 wheels slightly affects the off-road performance of the car.
• Apart from that when you are crossing off-road terrain you need somebody’s protection.
• So even in this, AX opts for Mahindra is also offering wheel arc cladding.
• And there are a couple of things in this base model that you are not going to get.

• Like company is not offering fog lamps and fender-mounted radio antennae.
• Although you can get all these necessary things with the accessories.
• Ok leave it and focus on another thing Mahindra Thar is really high from the ground.
• Because Mahindra Thar has 226 mm ground clearance but in the AX opt model it’s 219 mm.

• So to make your coming in and out of the car easier Thar is equipped with tubular steel side footsteps.
• Now speaking of the lights it has halogen headlamps and a fender-mounted indicator.
• And on the rear, you will get the same LED taillights with the Thar brand on them.
• Wheels are the things that can change the appearance of the car completely.

• But we are going to get only steel wheels but its ok steel wheels can be repaired easily.
• But I haven’t seen AX opt model on the road till now people are showing interest only in the LX model.
• I guess Mahindra Thar is getting popular more than Toyota Fortuner in India.

Mahindra Thar AX Opt Colors

• Well in this base model AX opt we will get the Same colour option as we got in the LX model
• Rocky Beige, Aqua Marine, Mystic Copper, Red Rage, Napoli Black, and Galaxy Grey.
• And Indians are showing their interest in Napoli’s Black colour.
• Speaking friendly I don’t like the black colour anymore but yes I was a fan of the black colour.
• And I haven’t seen Mahindra Thar in a colour other than black.
• Truly speaking Aqua Marine colour, and red Rage colours really stand out from the crowd.

Mahindra Thar AX opt interior

• Now Mahindra Jeep Thar took a huge step toward having modern interiors.
• So how Mahindra Thar AX model looks from the inside. Well looks a bit dated.
• I am saying this because Mahindra is not offering a touchscreen infotainment system.
• Instead of these, there is space left over to get an audio system as an accessory.

• Below if you will get some air conditioning controls with good-quality buttons.
• Although the rest of the design of the dashboard is the same as the LX model with some carbon finish.
• The thing that may bother you is no audio and phone controls are available on the steering.

• But the steering is hydraulically powered which reduced the effort to turn and manoeuvre the car.
• Hence you will be comfortable through the journey and you can adjust the steering tilt-wise according to your.
• The center console looks the same as Mahindra Thar LX with two cup holders and a gear knob.
• Now you might be thinking about why the Mahindra Jeep has less interior space.

• So let me tell you Mahindra designed Thar primarily for off-roading.
• That is why it has less interior space, especially in the back seats.
• And one more interesting thing is most of the buyers going to use Thar for travelling.
• And very fewer people know how much Thar AX is capable of.

• Talking about seating comfort seats are made up of vinyl material.
• Front seats are comfortable and keep you in the place no matter what kind of terrain is.
• Front seats are manually adjustable with height adjustability.

• But as we know the Mahindra Thar is a two-door vehicle so you need to slide the front seats to get inside the car.
• Yes, it’s a challenge to get into the second row and the second row can accommodate only three people.

Features of Mahindra Thar AX opt

• Thar AX opt has fewer features as compared to the LX model but still enough to impress you.
• I am happy to see all the basic features the company is offering to their customer.

4. Manual ORVMS.
5. Power front windows.
6. Remote Keyless entry.
7. Center Roof lamp.
8. Bottle holders in front doors.

11. 12 V Accessories Socket.
12. Central Locking.

Mahindra Thar AX Performance

• I have explained Mahindra Thar’s performance in my previous blog.

• In this variant also you will get one diesel engine and one petrol engine.
• The diesel engine is 2184 cc producing 130 hp and 300 nm of torque.
• And Petrol engine is 1997 cc producing 150 hp and 300 Nm of torque.

• And 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter gearbox comes with the Thar.
• Now let’s have a look at Mahindra Thar’s off-road ability and driving performance.
• As we know that Thar AX is a four Wheel Drive car (4X4) so it has a total of two differentials as far as my knowledge goes.
• One is on the front and the second differential is on the rear to connect with drive shafts.

• This centre differential remains connected with the transfer case to supply power to the front and rear wheels.
• So Mahindra Thar has an Electric Driveline disconnect on the front wheel.
• That stops the supply of power on the front wheel and the car will act as two-wheel drive.
• And when you are going off-road it may happen that your wheel is stuck in the mud and not coming out.
• So in this situation, a mechanical locking differential supplies power on both wheels equally.

• So that car gets maximum traction as a result SUV can come out easily from low traction surfaces.
• Apart from that Thar is also equipped with a brake locking differential.
• Now my favourite feature washable floor with a drain plug that really helps to clean the car from the inside.
• Now let’s have a look at the Mahindra Thar AX dimensions.
• Length is 3985 mm, width is 1820 and height is 1844 with (Hardtop).

• Whereas the wheelbase is 2480 mm and the front & rear track remain the same at 1520 mm.
• Speaking of off-road ability its 41.2 Deg Approach angle, 36 Deg Departure angle & ramp over angle is 26.2 mm.
• In case you are crossing a river or passing through a flooded area our car can stall easily.
• It, because you’re SUV, may not have sufficient wading capability.

• But it’s not in the car with the Thar because it gets 650 mm wading capability.
• Mahindra that have four seats two seats in the front and two in the rear.
• And Mahindra is currently not offering six-seater versions of Thar.

Working of High And Low ratios (2H/4H & 4L) Click to Watch

1. 2H (two-wheel-drive mode)

this mode engine, power will transfer only to the rear wheel and the vehicle will act as a two-wheel drive.

In this mode, vehicles produce good mileage, and the 2H mode is good for city and highway drives.

2. 4H (four-wheel-drive mode High Ratio)

In this mode engine power is equally distributed into the front wheels and rear wheels by a transfer case.

This mode is best suited to low traction surfaces like mud, slush, and rainy condition it provides a good grip on the road.

3. 4L (four-wheel-drive low ratio)

And this low-ratio mode is used for extreme off-road conditions and helps the vehicle to get maximum traction.

Engaging this mode speed of the vehicle will reduce and helps the vehicle in climbing hill, descending hill & Rock Crawling.

Note: vehicle should bring up to a halt before engaging in high and low ratio mode.

Thar AX opt Safety features

• Now let’s see how safe this base model of Thar is.
• Mahindra is offering all basic safety features with the Thar.
• Like it has an Anti-lock braking system with EBD and brake assist.
• Apart from that two Airbags have been provided to ensure safety during head-on collisions.
• And in case during off reading your SUV encounter roll back then don’t worry it has a roll cage to protect you.
